Photonics Seminar with Prof. Dr. Oriol Romero-Isart

Thursday, September 21, 2017, 16:00 HIT F 32 -  Hoenggerberg

** Speaker: Prof. Dr. Oriol Romero-Isart, University of Innsbruck

** Title: Levitated Nanomagnets: Magnons, Rotons, and Phonons

** Abstract: The talk will discuss how to magnetically levitate a non-rotating single magnetic domain nanoparticle in a static field configuration, despite Earnshaw’s theorem. We will show how to theoretically describe the external degrees of freedom (center-of-mass and rigid-body rotational motion) and internal degrees of freedom (single domain magnetization dynamics) both in the classical and in the quantum regime. We will discuss applications of levitated magnets for force and inertial sensing as well as the opportunities offered by controlling levitated nanomagnets to simulate and probe nanomagnetism in a unique substrate-free environment.
