** Title: Applications of ultrashort-pulse laser microfabrication

** Abstract: Light pulses of sub-picosecond duration can ablate any material with minimal effects on the areas surrounding the ablation zone. Material processing with ultrashort laser pulses is for this reason of great interest for many practical applications. In this talk, I will present an overview of the applications we developed in the last five years at the Fachhochschule Vorarlberg under the “Josef-Ressel-Center for material processing with ultrashort pulsed lasers”. Examples are the modification of surface-liquids interaction by surface patterning, where extreme wetting properties of a surface are generated and controlled in a simple way with high spatial resolution; the cutting of brittle materials, where the mechanical properties of the cut edges have to be preserved; the structuring of transparent surfaces for controlled scattering; and the cutting of heat-sensitive materials like bioabsorbable polymers.
